Perhentian – An island of Malaysia

An Introduction

A place like Perhentian actually doesn’t require any introduction in the world of tourism. There are lots and lots of aspects which depict the fame and popularity of Perhentian among many other countries which are mostly known for their natural resources and natural beauties. Perhentian mainly belongs to the very special country of Asia called Malaysia. It is located at a distance of about nineteen kilometres from the north eastern coast of western part of Malaysia. Perhentian is said to exist in the state of Terengganu of Malaysia. Again this particular state is present at a distance of sixty our kilometres from the southern part of the border of Thailand.

Geography

The Island of Perhentian is very famous for its magnificent geography. Its geography is quite interesting among the people of various countries.

 This island is specifically characterised by the beautiful white sand beaches.

 These sand beaches are very attractive and much preferred by the visitors coming to this island of Perhentian.

 The presence of coral reefs and crystalline water create the spectrum of beauty and many other factors which actually enhance the beauty of nature.

 The marine water existing over there is said to serve a variety of aquatic animals like jellyfish, reef fish etc.

 The island of Perhentian is also quite popular due to its elevated natural beauty and forests present over there.

 It is mostly known to have an elevation of about one hundred metres.

 The island is homogenously covered by the tropical forests mostly located around the coastal areas.

There is a very special and beautiful but small village called Kecil which is mostly known       for fishing purposes. Most of the inhabitants who are actually permanent in this island are said to reside in this small and beautiful village.

History

The name Perhentian is quite related with the history of this place. The word mainly means stopping point or the terminating point.

 The word Perhentian is actually said to belong to the language of Malay.

 This word also signifies the importance of the long term relationship between the two major countries called Malaysia and Thailand.

 The capital of Thailand called Bangkok is quite related with this trade and business aspects.

 Though this island mainly earns a handsome amount of money from tourism today, there was a time when majority of this country used to be fishermen.

 Many years ago most of the earnings of this island used to come from the business related to fishing.

 In the nineteenth and twentieth century the world map used to locate this island as The Station Island due to the concept of stopping point comes from the nomenclature of this island.

 Even there was a time during the decade 1900 people used to consider Perhentian as refuge.

Aspects of Tourism

As it has already been mentioned earlier that the main natural beauty of Perhentian comes from the white textured sand beaches and the overwhelming coral reefs, the business related to the tourism of Malaysia has quite flourished due to these beauties of nature. The colour of sea water is also quite lavishing which often attract a good number of tourists to this small and beautiful island.

 There are a lot of games and activities often performed for the sake of tourists and visitors coming to the Island of Perhentian.

 There are long beaches and dense forests where these activities can be performed well.

 Major activities are mainly scuba diving and swimming.

 Scuba diving is highly preferred in shallow water where lots and lots of small aquatic organisms can be viewed.

 Even other activities like trekking, fishing and jumping are also performed which can also be able to spread enjoyment and happiness among the tourists and visitors.

 Banana boat riding is also performed with well trained people in the beautiful sea beaches of Perhentian.

Lifestyle

Though nowadays tourism has become the major earning activity of this island, there are certain activities which are not always allowed to be performed in the sea beaches of Perhentian.

 In order to minimise the adverse effects of tourism on environment there are certain activities which require legal permission for being performed.

 The activities like sun bathing and scuba diving are always chosen for the tourists so that they cannot otherwise create any problem to the environment.

 Even today the people of this island suffer from the problem of not having the facilities regarding electricity.

 For this reason even today the people of this island use diesel generators for enabling supply of electricity in the whole island.

 In the year of 2007, the summer of Perhentian got a new era of electricity generation as well as supply.

 According to this new concept two wind turbines were put and established which of course provide electricity without creating the problem of pollution.

 At the same time these wind turbines are also able to provide electricity with lesser consumption of natural resources as well as money.

 But due to some unavoidable circumstances they were not connected properly according a bureau done in the month of October of the year 2008.

 Even under certain adverse conditions today people can get a twenty four hour electricity supply especially whenever there is a high need of the same.

Conservation of Resources

For the betterment of nature as well as for a country the conservation of natural resources is highly needed. The Governing body of this island is quite familiar with this fact and hence has implemented many steps which actually try to solve the problem regarding exploitation of natural resources.

 Basically the conservation of some rare and endangered turtles is carried out by the Governing body of this island.

 The fishery department of this island is actually said to run a hatchery which takes care of these endangered and rare species.

 There is certain oil spilling procedure which actually creates nuisance for these species by the certain oil mills.

Not only that the Governing body of this island is taking care of this matter in such a way so that no pollution from these oil mills can affect any natural resource of this island.
